"Whilst Dave and Andy will be familiar to h-Band aficionados, Yolanda, Ken and Carl may yet to be discovered and appreciated.. Yolanda Charles is one of London's top session bass-players and has toured most-notably in the past with Paul Weller and Robbie Williams. Ken and Carl are the prime movers in N. Irish band "Relish" who have been lauded in the past by Brian May (Queen) and Larry Mullen (U2). I have chosen Ken and Carl specifically for their voices as I wanted to be sure I have some great singers on stage to cover the more complex vocal arrangements and effects on the "Not The Weapon But The Hand" album. Yolanda sings well too so Richard and I are confident that, vocally, the band will sound as good as it will musically. Musically, of course, it will be top-drawer." h

Thank you all for the best Port Zelande Centerparcs weekend EVER. An unbelievable vibe! I was so elated after the show on Sunday night that I came straight out and danced in the crowd. Soon we'll do it all again in Montreal! And then Wolverhampton in April (see marillion.com for tickets).

Richard Barbieri and I have confirmed a tour of Europe early this September. The show will present "Not The Weapon But The Hand" (http://www.marillion.com/band/hogarth.htm#) live in addition to music from Porcupine Tree, the h Band and Richard Barbieri's instrumental music. There will be dates to be announced soon in Poland, Germany, Holland, France and the UK.

Well, that last message from Toulouse was written just before the tour bus broke down! Had to get cabs to Barcelona and later sang for the King of Spain! You couldn't make it up.. Anyway, I'm now deep in rehearsals for a new performance of "Brave" at the Port Zelande weekend. Mightily involved stuff in every sense.. I hope I see you there, but if not, have a good spring and I hope to see you again soon.

Greetings from Toulouse!
Marillion tour going well. Last leg. But I was on my last legs in the middle, and now feel refreshed after a few weeks off over Christmas. Thanks to those who left congrats on the guest book for my #1 in Prog Magazine. Chuffed, naturally, but a wise(ish) man once said "Quiet applause will do.." They shower you with flowers then they bury you n'est-ce pas?
Don't bury me just yet!. 'still life in the old dog. (It's not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog..)

Well, heavens! Christmas is upon us! I have managed to catch yet another cold in time for my solo gigs! The voice is working but I might be a bit bunged up in the nose.. Should be interesting.. (Have yourself a berry little Christmas etc..)
Cheers to all who bought tickets (I believe we're all sold out now). I have NO IDEA what I'm going to do when I get on stage but that's half the fun innit? I will in the meantime try to rehearse unknowable things for the unknown set list. If you're coming to Liverpool, please remember that there's no bar but you ARE allowed to bring your own plonk. How cool..
Feel free to bring a bauble to hang on my tree (or anything else for that matter..) and prepare yourself an intelligent question to ask me as I like to talk and it always goes quiet when I ask if anyone wants to ask me anything..

Apologies for my absence here of late. Just a quick note to say I AM still alive (as many of you will have seen down Mexico way..). I managed to get through the S American tour without falling off a piano or destroying anything, I came back with most of my teeth, and I have repaired and replaced what was broken in time for the European Marillion shows which commence in Lille tomorrow. I'm looking forward to it, and I'm especially looking forward to the intimacy of the h Natural Christmas shows - now a tradition!
Thank you all for my sell-outs in Liverpool and London. I'm told there's still tickets left for Glasgow.. Always a blast north of the border. I hope you can make it.

Last night the world lost Neil Armstrong. For my generation, perhaps the ultimate hero. I have the great good fortune to have known him and I will mourn the passing of not just a great man, but a thoroughly decent and thoughtful bloke. My thoughts are with his family.

Lunch in Oxford with my other (and better) half, Linette, LOADS of texts from chums, and the pub-quiz in the evening with a few close friends (we lost!). h's "Bring a Bauble" gigs

As tradition dictates, I have decided to, once again, play an "h Natural" Christmas show at St Brides Church in Liverpool on Saturday 17th December in addition to the London gig at the 100 Club on Sunday 18th.
I thought it might be mightily festive if I ask everyone to bring a bauble and perhaps some tinsel and we'll "dec" the tree (and maybe generally "trim up" the room) during the shows. 'Could be a vibe..
So come along to either London or Liverpool for a collaborative evening of music and Christmas cheer, and I'll provide a tree for you to trim, and sing you a song or two ..or twenty-two.

Richard and I recorded drums with Arran Ahmun last week and the session went very well so Mr B has taken it all away to work further on the music while I get back to Marillion album 17.

So.. Greetings from Real World studios (nice place, lovely people) nestling in the hills just outside Bath in the West of England! Marillion are working here this week. The weather's been rainy so far but the studio is fabulous and the boys are all in good form. A creative streak is upon us and our tails are up. There's a huge screen behind the (also huge) mixing desk and we've been projecting movies and psychedelic animation during the jams to provide additional vibe. Nice work if you can get it..

10 August 2011 -What I did on my holidays..

Marillion have decided to take August off for summer hols. This means I can dedicate a whole month to seriously moving forward with the Hogarth Barbieri album which I have been developing in my spare time. Richard has sent me some truly magical music and I'm finding it so inspiring and easy to gather words and ideas to transform these into "songs". I say "songs" in inverted commas because there is no need to think in conventional terms at all about the structures or, indeed, to worry about the rule-book. I can simply enjoy myself and paint pictures with my voice. I'm layering up vocal textures and having a lot of fun here in the loft.

What does it sound like? It sounds like nothing I've ever heard. Is it too weird then? Well, everyone to whom I have so far played the demo's have been knocked out!. These people are my kids, girlfriend, and a small circle of mates (mostly "cool- farmers" and their wives) so I'm confident it's a cross-section in terms of taste. Last week Richard and I paid a visit to the brilliant and lovely Dave Gregory who is currently writing some string arrangements and (knowing him!) playing a bit of guitar on a couple of tracks. Exciting times..

A fantastic sunny day here at h towers. I'm in the hammock with a lolly, and so, naturally, my thoughts have turned to Christmas. I have been offered a Sunday night at the legendary 100 Club at 100 Oxford Street in the heart of London's west-end, so have confirmed Sunday 18th of December for a SOLO CHRISTMAS PARTY!
Yes, I know you're probably already coming to the Forum on the 14th to see the Marillos, but you might also fancy something intimate for Christmas..?
So if you've always wanted to ask me the name of my first pet (quite handy for hacking into my bank account) but never had the chance, or if you wonder why I wrote what I wrote, or want to hear some of my all-time favourite songs stripped back to a voice and not much else (apart from my questionable piano-playing..) or if you just want to find out what colour this hammock is, come and help yourself to one of my baubles..

Phew! What a fortnight! What a month!
Thanks to all who braved the freezing St Brides Church, Liverpool. Dunno about you but my knees were actually frosty when I took my trousers off.. The Garage was warmer, fortunately, although I played like I was wearing mittens, so apologies to the piano players in the audience.
Fabulous atmosphere at both for which I am indebted to you.
Have a completely brilliant Christmas and I look forward to Köln (Cologne) on January 8th - already sold out. Loves, it will be special for me no matter what happens.
As my mother used to say to me, "There's no heaven or hell, you make it here on earth, the choice is yours."

New Website

Ah, greetings h-heads! We thought it was time for a bit of a makeover on the site here. Being as the h band has taken er.. "a bit of a rest" (understatement) and as I seem to be going out all on my ownsome these days, we've made the design reflect that. I hope you like it. And if you preferred the other design, well, I hope you get used to this one! I'll be making more of an effort to keep in touch than I have in the recent past (shoddy..) so come back soon and have another look.
Thanks to all who made the trip to Dublin. A fantastic vibe and excellent community singing. I have never heard 3 Minute Boy sung better (or louder) by the crowd, and it was particularly good to be asked a few questions (even if my answers may have lacked discretion somewhat..) and get a dialogue going.
I'm off to be a rockstar in Germany and hang out in bars with Deep Purple for the rest of the month (Good heavens..) and then I'll be popping "solo" to Holland and Italy in December before returning to England for Liverpool and London. I'm excited to say that it looks like I may have a few chums popping up for the London show. Keep it to yourself..
